Private equity is the largest asset class in the alternative investments universe and has seen sustained growth and evolution in recent years. From the continued trends of capital formation shifting toward private markets and companies staying private for longer, to the emergence of innovative fund vehicles and a growing secondary market that are democratizing access for individual investors, the asset class continues to mature and change. In this webcast, we discussed the current state of private equity, emerging trends, and what private equity investors can expect to see moving forward.

 

A recent joint event between CAIA Association’s Virtual Chapter and CFA Society Columbus featured Glen Yelton, Head of Responsible Investing, Americas at Invesco and Aaron Filbeck, CAIA, CFA, CIPM, Associate Director of Content Development at CAIA Association and Vice President at CFA Society Columbus. Glen and Aaron covered a variety of topics including the evolution of sustainable investing, the current ESG landscape in the time of COVID-19, ESG application in fixed income and private markets, institutional adoption of ESG policies, and other issues such as performance considerations and strategy "greenwashing."

CAIA and CFA Society Emirates organised a panel of experts to explore the intersection between technology, data and investor motivations as key accelerators of impact investment activity pre, during, and post-COVID 19. The speakers discussed the impact investment trends that were already on the uptick prior to the COVID-19 global market slowdown, sustained during the pandemic, and can be anticipated to remain relevant as the global economy arrives at a new normal. They also took a close look at how impact is measured and how it correlates with investor behavior and expectations in the GCC region.
Should retail investors be allowed to participate in private capital? Do the social and financial risks outweigh the long term benefits? With so much capital formation shifting to the private markets, are retirement goals at risk by relying solely on public markets? Bill Kelly, CEO, CAIA, and John Bowman, Senior Managing Director, CAIA, join a panel of experts including Andrea Auerbach, Partner and Head of Global Private Investments at Cambridge Associates, Barbara Roper, Director of Investor Protection at Consumer Federation of America, and Lawrence Calcano, Chief Executive Officer at iCapital Network to provide a balanced and objective dialogue about how the industry should weigh these complex topics.

In Part I, Aaron Filbeck, CAIA, CFA, CIPM, Associate Director, Content Development; and Chris Hamilton, Head of Asia Ex-Japan Client Solutions, Invesco Investment Solutions, discuss Invesco’s current capital market assumptions for traditional and alternative investments, how taking a goals-based approach can better inform the investment process, and how alternative investments can be used to improve outcomes for institutions seeking to meet their return targets while managing volatility.

Insights Into Institutional Investing: Part II:  In Part II, Aaron and Chris start the discussion with a high level overview of some differences across institutional portfolios, both regionally and by type of institution. The remainder of the discussion takes a deep dive two hypothetical institutional portfolios. They find that, depending on the objective of the institutions, differing levels of alternative investments and particular sub-industries becomes very appropriate.

Laura Merlini, CAIA, Managing Director at CAIA Association talked with Jason Mitchell, Co-Head Responsible Investing, at the Man Group for his perspective on Climate change and Covid-19. Global problems require global solutions -- another lesson learned as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic in the year of the Earth Day 50th anniversary – that may lead to a deeper understanding of the ties that bind us on a global scale and should boost a coordinated reaction to address the Climate change threat. Jason discusses the focus on renewables, after the collapse in oil prices, as a now concrete option. Oil volatility is problematic if you are a business wanting a capacity plan. Renewable energy has a smoother trade range. The interview also addresses the idea of a shared economy in the post-pandemic era, the consequential tight restrictions on social gatherings, how this will affect the way we live our cities and, as a consequence, climate change.
